A New Caledonian holiday will leave you breathless with its beauty, plentiful activities, perfect weather and loads of attractions. Take some time out to simply unwind, eating crusty bread, drinking lattes and relaxing in the sun on the New Caledonian beaches.
Visit the New Caledonian Tourism Office, collect a map, check out the local currency and have fun. For the local Kanak culture, visit the Tjibaou Cultural Centre in Noumea, the capital. The building itself is distinctive and houses artifacts and archives from history. Enjoy the current exhibition, plays and concerts of indigenous cultural traditions.
Just north of the airport turnoff, visit the Grotte de la Reine Hortense. Bring your torch to view the stalactites in this fabulous cave. Noumea is almost totally French with its museums, old colonial homes, markets and the Aquarium which is one of the leading institutes for aquatic research.
For the Kanak culture you will need to leave Noumea: hire a car or take a New Caledonian tour. The east coast offers spectacular scenery. Take a trip to Hienghene to see the lagoon which is surrounded by huge black cliffs.
Noumea has the largest lagoon in the world and the Amedee Lighthouse is worth a look. It was shipped to Noumea in pieces and reassembled. The new Museum of Maritime History records the shipwrecks and their artefacts.
Travel New Caledonia for its duty free shopping, some of the best in the South Pacific.
Take the catamaran to the Isle of Pines and the Loyalty Islands for more New Caledonian beaches and fun in the sun!
With some of the best white sand beaches in the world, New Caledonia has 1,200 kilometres of coral reef to explore. Go scuba diving and windsurfing or taking a ride in a glass-bottomed boat to get up close with the coral and its wonderfully diverse inhabitants.
